Brenda is a Registered Nurse (Learning Disability) who now works freelance and as an associate of Caring Solutions (UK) Ltd in the field of learning disability. For 24 years, until her retirement in January 2015, Brenda was employed by the only NHS Trust in England exclusively for people with learning disabilities.
She has worked as a member of multi-disciplinary teams with individuals with a learning disability and associated difficulties, many of them complex and having a negative impact on the quality of their lives, in community and in-patient services.
She has worked at ward management level and, more recently, in Practice Education. She developed an Assistant Practitioner Programme, delivering a Foundation Degree in Supporting Vulnerable Adults in Learning Disability settings and identifying relevant competency frameworks for trainees in nursing, occupational therapy and psychology.
She is a trainer and advisor to staff working with the Cognitive Rehabilitation model of care for individuals with significant cognitive difficulties, especially with autism, learning disability, and acquired brain injury. She is co-author of a published article about this model.
